Child safe joinery Dubai: what parents should check first

Child safe joinery in Dubai is built in furniture that cannot tip, cannot trap small fingers, and is finished with low VOC products that stay within safe limits in a sealed bedroom. Here is what to check, what it costs, and how to brief a joiner.

What child safe joinery actually means in Dubai

In Dubai, child safe joinery means furniture designed around a child's height, reach and weight rather than scaled down adult furniture. Judge a joiner by the shop drawings and the board data sheet, not by the label. Our kids joinery Dubai guides cover the wider range of builds.

Housing shapes the design. In a JVC apartment a child's wardrobe often runs wall to wall in a room under three metres wide, so the doors must open without touching the bed. On Palm Jumeirah, where villas usually have a larger playroom, the same brief becomes low storage, a study desk and a reading corner built as one unit. Either way the survey is identical: wall type, skirting, sockets, AC grille, door swing and lift access are checked before anything is drawn. A wardrobe that covers a socket or blocks an air vent cannot be fixed later.

The six safety checks we run on every kids job

Six checks decide whether a fitted unit is genuinely safe: how it is fixed to the wall, the radius on every edge, the hinge type, the size of the gaps, the emissions from board and finish, and how the unit affects ventilation. All six belong in the quote.

  • Wall fixing and anti tip. Anything taller than 600 mm is mechanically fixed into the wall, not left standing on the floor. We anchor into concrete, block or studs and fit a metal anti tip bracket on tall wardrobes and bunk beds. This is standard on every custom kids wardrobe Dubai build.
  • Edge radius. Exposed corners get a 2 to 3 mm radius or a chamfer. A sharp 90 degree corner at a three year old's head height is the most common avoidable injury in bedroom joinery.
  • Soft close hinges and runners. A wardrobe door on a standard hinge closes hard enough to hurt a hand. Soft close hinges cost very little and change how the furniture behaves every day.
  • Finger pinch gaps. Gaps between roughly 8 mm and 25 mm can trap small hands. Doors, drawers and toy boxes need consistent gaps, stoppers and rounded pulls, the same detail we use across our kids toy storage joinery Dubai builds.
  • Low VOC board and finish. Emissions build up in a bedroom with the AC running and the door closed. E1 or E0 panels with a water based finish stay within safe indoor limits from the first night.
  • Ventilation and window guards. Never block the AC grille or the window opening with a run of wardrobes. If the room has a low window, the guard and the joinery should be planned together.

That review followed a hospital renovation by the team, and the same quality control applies to a child's bunk bed.

Materials and finishes that pass the test

For kids joinery in Dubai the safe build is a blockboard or E1 rated MDF carcass, sealed edge banding on all four sides, and a water based lacquer or low pressure laminate finish. Ask for the board certificate and the finish data sheet before you approve a design.

  • Carcass. Blockboard for long spans such as bunk bed rails and desks, 18 mm E1 or E0 MDF for wardrobe sides, doors and drawer boxes. E1 caps formaldehyde at 0.124 mg per cubic metre in the chamber test, and E0 is tighter.
  • Edge banding. 2 mm ABS or PVC, glued and trimmed on every visible edge including the underside of shelves. Raw MDF cores swell in Dubai humidity, and a swollen edge becomes an exposed edge.
  • Finish. Water based lacquer sprayed in a booth, or low pressure laminate. Solvent heavy finishes can smell for weeks in an apartment with the windows shut.
  • Coatings children touch. EN 71-3 sets migration limits for heavy metals such as lead in toy surface coatings, a useful benchmark for bunk bed rails and toy boxes.
  • Hardware. Soft close hinges, full extension runners with stoppers, and no exposed screw heads at hand height.

What child safe joinery costs in Dubai

Expect AED 3,500 to 9,000 for a custom kids wardrobe, AED 4,500 to 11,000 for a child safe bunk bed, AED 1,800 to 5,500 for a toy storage unit, and AED 8,000 to 20,000 for a fitted playroom. The ranges below are supply and installation for standard sizes in laminate.

UnitTypical AED range
Kids wardrobe, two doors3,500 to 9,000
Child safe bunk bed with guardrail4,500 to 11,000
Toy storage or low drawer bank1,800 to 5,500
Fitted playroom joinery8,000 to 20,000

What moves the price:

  • Board grade. E0 panels cost roughly 15 to 25 percent more than E1.
  • Finish. Water based lacquer costs more than laminate but gives a softer, more premium surface.
  • Hardware. Branded soft close hinges and full extension runners add AED 40 to 90 per door or drawer.
  • Access. A straight run in a JVC apartment installs quickly, while a staircase delivery on Palm Jumeirah can add a full day of labour.
  • Height. Floor to ceiling units use more board and need a stronger fixing detail.
  • Bunk beds. Guardrail height, ladder position and wall fixing all change the build, and our custom bunk beds for kids page covers the sizing rules.

A two door wardrobe in a JVC apartment with E1 board, soft close hinges and an anti tip fixing usually lands near AED 4,200 including installation.

Dubai rules and practicalities

Fixed built in joinery in Dubai normally needs written approval from your building management or developer before installation. Commercial units and some freehold communities route that approval through the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism and a licensed contractor. Confirm the requirement for your building before you pay a deposit.

  • Permit and NOC. Building management no objection certificates usually cover lift use, working hours, waste removal and protection of common areas.
  • Humidity. Sealed edges, moisture resistant board and a sealed back panel stop swelling in rooms that are cleaned daily.
  • Lead time. Two to four weeks in the workshop after design sign off, plus one day for installation and snagging.
  • Access. Measure the lift, the stairwell and the door width before the unit is built, not after.

A typical kids joinery job runs in four steps:

  1. Site visit. We measure the room and check the wall type, sockets, AC grille, door swing and approval requirements.
  2. Design and sign off. You approve the drawing, board grade, edge banding and hardware before cutting starts.
  3. Workshop build. Cutting, edge banding, spraying and hardware fitting happen off site, which keeps dust out of your home.
  4. Installation and safety check. We fix the unit to the wall, set the soft close doors, test the gaps and hand over.

Questions to ask your joiner before you pay

Ask about the wall fixing method, board grade, edge banding thickness, hardware brand and who checks the unit after installation. A joiner who cannot answer those in writing is not building kids joinery.

  • The fixing method for your wall type, in writing
  • The board certificate showing E1 or E0
  • Edge banding thickness and where it is applied
  • Hinge and runner brand and model
  • Gap tolerance between doors and drawers
  • Who signs off the safety check on installation day

Frequently asked questions

How much does a custom kids wardrobe cost in Dubai?

Most custom kids wardrobes in Dubai land between AED 3,500 and AED 9,000 depending on size, board grade and finish. A two door unit in E1 board with soft close hinges and an anti tip fixing usually costs near AED 4,200 installed. E0 panels and spray finishes push the price toward the top of the range.

Is MDF safe for a child's bedroom in Dubai?

It is safe when the panels are E1 or E0 rated and every edge is sealed. Raw MDF edges release more formaldehyde and swell in Dubai humidity, so edge banding on all four sides matters. Water based lacquer or low pressure laminate is the finish to ask for.

Do I need a permit for built in kids joinery in Dubai?

Most apartment buildings and villa communities ask for an NOC or fit out approval from building management before fixed joinery goes in. Commercial units and some freehold communities handle this through a Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism approved contractor. Confirm the requirement for your building before you pay a deposit.

How long does custom kids joinery take in Dubai?

Plan on two to four weeks in the workshop after you sign off the design, plus one day for installation and snagging. Measurement and design approval usually take another week. Book early if the room must be ready for a school term.

Do you build kids joinery on Palm Jumeirah and in JVC?

Yes. We work across Palm Jumeirah, JVC and wider Dubai, and access is planned during the site visit. A staircase delivery in a Palm Jumeirah villa is scheduled differently from a lift delivery in a JVC apartment tower.
